Lichterschwimmen Zurich

Every year on 20 December, Zurich hosts and thanks the people of Zurich and the national and international visitors for this special event of Advent. At 6 pm, during the traditional “Lichterschwimmen”, hundreds of small boats lit by candles are launched from the Stadthausquai for a pleasant trip on the Limmat River. These boats are made every year by the means of the edge by the pupils of the canton of Zurich. They obviously take care of themselves to put their work in the water. This friendly Christmas event excites tourists and locals.
This marvelous event dates back to 1962, when teacher Hansruedi Obi of the Ilgen School wanted to celebrate the school’s famous “Schulsylvester” with his class a little differently and at the same time astonishes the people of Zurich. With his class, he made with the means of the edge boats lit by candles that were launched at 7am in the morning of the “Schulsylvester” from the Stadthausquai. In 1991, teacher Jürg Inhelder from Balgrist School personally took up this tradition, which has become very popular. With his pupils, he made by the means of the edge, with each Advent, 800 small boats illuminated with candles. Even since that time, this event has been a popular tradition celebrated every year before Christmas.
